The NorthCon ASUS ROG StarCraft II Tournament started today on December 6th 2013. The tournament has faced many problems right from the start which have been apparent to every party involved including the players and the audience. Some of the problems have been out of the hands of the organizers, such as the bad weather in Germany affecting the travel schedules of the players and the staff, but no doubt a portion of the problems can be attributed to the lack of experience in running a high caliber offline tournament.

We at Peliliiga, which is the organizer behind the ASUS ROG StarCraft II tournaments held in the past, have been following the event closely. After the troublesome first day at NorthCon, we saw it necessary to inform the esports community that the ASUS ROG Tournament at NorthCon 2013 is independent from Peliliiga and the events organized by Peliliiga.

Peliliiga wishes NorthCon the best of luck for tomorrow. Apparently at least the stream issues are being taken care of. Let us hope the second day at the NorthCon ASUS ROG Tournament redeems the first by offering an entertaining tournament at the quality the community has been accustomed to.

Conflict in the bracket draw

At the end of the Group Stage 2 broadcast the playoffs bracket was drawn. First the players who finished first in their groups were put in, and then the players who came second in their groups. The way a tournament bracket is usually formed forces the players who were in the same group in the opposite sides of the bracket, meaning that they can not meet again until the finals. Unfortunately, this fact was overlooked in the bracket draw. As a result, TaeJa/HyuN and DRG/Alicia were put in the same sides of the bracket even though they had been in the same groups.

The conflict was soon discovered after the broadcast ended and the necessary measures were taken to solve the situation. It was decided that HyuN and Alicia will switch places so that Happy will play Alicia, Not HyuN, and StarDust plays HyuN instead of Alicia. Luckily the players or their managers could be contacted right away and the new bracket brought to their attention.

We apologise for the mistake which caused misinformation to spread and inconvenience to the players as well as the audience.

It is less than a week until the first matches of ASUS ROG Summer 2013 go live. The players have now been placed in the groups for the first group stage which will be played on the first day of the tournament, Thursday 1st August 13:00--22:30 CEST. The 32 players are divided into groups of four, which will be played in dual tournament format with best-of-5 matches. The top two players of each group advance to the second group stage, which is played in a similar fashion on Friday 2nd August.
